Celts and Romans

San Candido’s origins date far back into the past. In 1000 BC, the Illyrians and then the Celts colonised the sunny slopes of Monte San Candido. Later, in 100 AD, the Romans arrived, built roads in the valley and a station called Littanum in campo gelau, in the icy field. In the place where the Via Claudia Augusta met the via Julia Augusta.
